Tokyo Middorengusu – Grace
The Tokyo Middorengusu (Goo Sue) is a modern midlength with a beautifully balanced character — enough volume and glide to make catching waves effortless, but with the refinement and response to encourage proper surfing once you're on your feet.
Originally designed by Phil Hodge and revised by Steve Hendon in 2022, the Middorengusu has developed into a board that sits comfortably between traditional single-fin lines and modern midlength performance.
Its relaxed rocker and carefully balanced outline allow the board to carry speed naturally, while the refined rails and bottom contours give it enough response to be pushed when the wave offers something more.
The Middorengusu loves open faces and long lines. It carries speed through flatter sections, holds a beautiful trim and responds smoothly when you move your weight around the board. Rather than demanding constant input, it rewards good positioning and allows the wave to provide much of the energy.
Ride it as a traditional single fin for long, drawn-out lines, or add the side bites and give the board more drive and hold when the surf gets more powerful.
Whether you're cruising clean summer walls, connecting sections on a smaller day or settling into a long autumn point wave, the Middorengusu is happiest when you let it run.
Grace isn't about making the biggest turn. It's about making every turn look effortless.
Design Philosophy:
The Middorengusu is built around a simple idea: a midlength should give you freedom rather than dictate how you surf.
The relaxed rocker and generous planing area provide effortless paddle power and early wave entry, while the refined outline keeps the board feeling responsive rather than cumbersome.
A flat section through the centre of the bottom helps the board maintain speed through slower sections, flowing into double concave and refined hard tucked rails towards the tail. This combination gives the Middorengusu a natural sense of acceleration while retaining positive control when you move onto the back foot.
The result is a board that can be trimmed, turned, redirected or simply allowed to run.
It doesn't demand a particular style.
It gives you the space to develop your own.

Designer's Notes:
The Middorengusu was developed around the pleasure of simply moving well through a wave.
It isn't a board that needs to be forced into tight turns or pushed through every section. Its natural speed allows you to look further down the wave, find the open face and let the board carry you through it.
The ability to ride it as a single fin gives the board a beautifully clean and connected feel. Add the side bites and it becomes more positive and controlled when the surf gets faster or more powerful.
That versatility is important, but the real character of the Middorengusu comes from the way everything works together.
Paddle out.
Find your line.
Let it run.
Then move when the wave asks you to.
The best surfing often looks effortless because the board is doing exactly what you need it to do.

Tokyo Design Philosophy:
Every Tokyo Surfboard begins as a conversation.
Ideas are sketched, prototypes are built, outlines are refined and details are questioned until every element earns its place.
We don't chase annual model releases or passing trends. Every design in the Tokyo collection exists because it solves a problem, offers a unique surfing experience or reminds us why we fell in love with surfing in the first place.
Each board is individually hand-shaped in Britain by master craftsmen using carefully selected materials and construction methods chosen for longevity rather than planned obsolescence.
We believe the most sustainable surfboard is one that remains in the water for decades, not seasons.
Tokyo Surfboards was founded on a simple belief:
Build better boards. Build fewer boards. Build boards worth keeping.
