Tokyo Ninja – Weapon
The Tokyo Ninja is a weapon of a board for surf you have to fight in.
A familiar hybrid template with roots in old-school twin-pin design, the Ninja combines a wide, fish-inspired nose with a pulled-in pin tail. The result is an unusual combination of paddle power, speed and turning ability that allows the board to handle a remarkably wide range of conditions.
Originally designed by Phil Hodge and subsequently refined by Bill Atlee, the Ninja has been part of the Tokyo range for more than a decade. It has earned its place by doing something that sounds simple but is surprisingly difficult to achieve: going fast when the wave doesn't want to let you.
The flat rocker is a huge part of its character. A small amount of nose lift provides forgiveness on late take-offs, while the flat centre section generates speed almost immediately and allows the Ninja to blast through weak sections that would leave a more conventional performance board struggling.
But speed is only half the story.
The pulled-in pin tail, low rails and carefully balanced bottom contours give the Ninja the response to change direction when the wave gets more demanding. A subtle V leads into single concave before V-ing again through the tail, creating a board that moves quickly from rail to rail without feeling nervous beneath your feet.
The five-fin setup allows the Ninja to change personality with the conditions. Run it as a thruster for a familiar, controlled performance feel or switch to a quad when you want more speed and drive.

Design Philosophy:
The Ninja was developed around a simple problem:
How do you make a board that can get through difficult sections without sacrificing the ability to properly surf the wave?
The wide fish-style nose provides useful float and paddle power, while the pulled-in tail keeps the rear of the board narrow enough to engage the rail and turn.
The flat rocker is deliberately speed-focused. Rather than relying on rocker to generate performance, the Ninja uses its outline and bottom contours to create acceleration and carry that speed through weaker parts of the wave.
That makes it particularly effective in the kind of surf where you need to make your own momentum.
But when the wave improves, the Ninja doesn't suddenly become redundant.
The low rails provide a positive, responsive feel when transitioning from rail to rail, while the pin tail allows the board to hold a line and fit into more critical sections.
The five-fin setup then gives you another way to tune the board to the day.
It's not a board designed for one perfect type of wave.
It's designed for the waves that make you work.

The Ninja has been part of the Tokyo range for more than twelve years, and there's a reason it has stuck around.
It works.
The design isn't trying to be the most specialised board in the rack. Instead, it gives you the speed to escape weak sections and the outline control to deal with the better ones.
It's particularly good at making difficult surf feel less difficult.
You can paddle it easily, get in early, generate speed and then decide what the wave is going to give you.
The five-fin setup means you can tune the board accordingly.

The Ninja doesn't care whether the surf is clean and perfect.
Give it something to fight and it gets to work.

Wave Size: Hip to over head 3–7'.
Wave Type: Beach breaks, reefs and points ranging from weak, mushy surf through to fast, hollow waves.
Skill Level: Higher Intermediate to Advanced.
Best For: Surfers wanting a fast, adaptable hybrid that can generate speed in weak sections while retaining the control to handle more powerful surf.
Not Designed For: Surfers looking for a dedicated small-wave groveller or an ultra-specialised competition shortboard.
